Old Town Area

It is said that California was born in the Old Town Area of San Diego. Founded by the Spanish Father Junipero Serra in 1769, the Old Town was the heart of San Diego until 1820, when many inhabitants moved to the Gaslamp Quarter.

But the past is still alive in the Old Town Area. You may hear it in the whispering of the wind, the smile of the sun and in the heart of the people around you. Just take a walk in the Old Town Historic Park and you’ll feel the present slip away. The park covers nine square blocks and each building is a miniature museum. You’ll discover the first school and the first newspaper office in California, a stable, a blacksmith shop and many other charming old buildings. In the Old Town Area you may also visit the haunted Whaley House, the Junipero Serra Museum, the Heritage Park made up of seven houses built in a Victorian style, the Mormon Battalion and Sheriff’s Museum. Also, several shops and boutiques invite you to buy original gifts for your friends and family. If you can’t bottle up your memories, you can at least take a piece of Old Town back home with you.
